『Colossus, the almost forgotten project』
My distant memory of COLOSSUS, THE FORBIN PROJECT from seeing it on TV was of a suspenseful, intelligent science fiction film (yes, sci-fi films used to be suspenseful and intellingent), before the genre became effects driven. So in many ways this harks back to before 2001, even though its rogue computer is very much post-2001. The film is probably closer to the likes of FAIL SAFE and THE CHINA SYNDROME (directed by COLOSSUS writer James Bridges) than much of what we consider "sci-fi", and seeing it again some 30 years later, it's held up well. It's not particularly cinematic, and perhaps is well-suited to television, provided, of course, that it's in correct aspect ratio...in the US it's been released 4:3/p&s, a very unkind gesture. Like the UK DVD, the Japanese disc presents the film 16:9, and one can have no complaints, though the audio commentary on the UK disc is not available here...rather that had been ported over than the DVD was given an unnecessary slipcase.
